When you get past the age of 35 and have to keep up with a demanding job, finding the time and energy to get in shape can feel like an uphill battle.
Between demanding jobs, family, and the natural effects of aging, it’s easy to let your fitness slip through the cracks.
But the truth is, it’s never too late to reclaim your health and get in the shape of your life.
Today, I’m excited to share the story of Chris, a 48-year-old from Newcastle, who works a physically demanding job, overseeing old abandoned coal mines. Despite his challenging schedule and the wear and tear of daily life, Chris decided it was time to make a change.
His journey is a powerful example of what’s possible with the right mindset and guidance.
Let’s dive into Chris’s story, where he shares his struggles, victories, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
Whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or looking for that extra push to keep going, Chris’s experience might be just the inspiration you need…
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I’m 48, I live with my partner in a village between Newcastle and Durham. I work for a water company that contracts to The Coal Authority. I look after the old abandoned and flooded mines.
What happened that made you know you needed to make changes?
I was feeling fat, stiff as a board, and not happy with myself. I was going on holiday in a few months’ time and didn’t want to feel or look like this.
What were your goals when you started?
Lose fat, lose weight, build muscle, and look better in the mirror.
What did you try (either on your own or with other coaches/programs) to achieve your goal before working with Dean, and how was that working out?
I messed around for a few years on and off with different ideas.
Expensive online personal trainers, online gimmicks, online coaches, my own plans—you name it. Basically, I just gave my money to any nut job who sounded like they knew what they were doing!
What physical results have you achieved?
I’ve lost body fat, shed most of the weight I wanted to get rid of, toned up, and if I say so myself, I look better in the mirror.
But that’s just the physical side. I feel so much better in myself—more flexible, less achy in general, and I have more energy.
And what kind of bigger impacts has that had on your life?
I’m more organized with life in general now. My time is managed better, and with my newfound energy and well-being, I’m more confident.
What are you feeling most proud of?
Sticking with the plan. I’ve tried multiple things to get where I am now, and every time, I’ve come unstuck and stopped.
What was your biggest challenge through this process, and how did you overcome it?
Life getting in the way. Unexpected things happen that you have to deal with, which takes you away from what you want to do, like training and meal prep. This was a big challenge because, in the past, I’ve said, “stuff it, I can’t do it all.”
The lessons that Dean teaches are great as you learn to navigate through times like this. Wipe the slate clean, dial it up and down, and remember—you don’t have to be perfect, just consistent.
How would you describe your coaching experience with Dean on the program?
Fantastic. His system is detailed but not overwhelming, and it takes into account that there are ups and downs in life.
He guides you through to make informed decisions to get to your goals.
What advice would you give to other men just starting out?
Stick with it. It’s taken a long time to get where you are, so don’t expect overnight or 4-week new body results. Take your time—slow and steady.
Chris’s journey is a testament to what can be achieved with persistence, structure, the right guidance, and a willingness to adapt to life’s challenges.
