How Steve Transformed His Life at 47: From Exhaustion to Energy and Strength - Dean McMenamin

How Steve Transformed His Life at 47: From Exhaustion to Energy and Strength

Does this sound familiar?

You wake up already feeling drained. The energy to tackle the day is nowhere to be found, and the thought of doing anything beyond the bare essentials—work, eat, sleep—is overwhelming. If you’re a dad over 35, you might feel stuck in this cycle, wondering where the energetic version of yourself went.

Steven Robbie, a 47-year-old bridge operative from Dundee, knows exactly how this feels. Living in Arbroath with his wife, two sons, a stepson, and two granddaughters, Steven loved paddleboarding and camping but found himself too tired to fully enjoy these activities—or even spend quality time with his family.

The Wake-Up Call

Steven’s breaking point came when he realised just how lethargic and uninspired he felt.

“I was always tired and had no energy whatsoever. I would wake up feeling very lethargic and struggle to find the motivation to do anything other than what was necessary—eat, work, and sleep.”

This wasn’t the life Steven wanted. He wanted to be active, energetic, and engaged—but something had to change.

Taking the First Step

Steven’s initial goals were clear:

“I wanted to lose weight, eat healthier, get less lazy, and be more energetic and active.”

Like many others, Steven had tried online workout programs, mostly HIIT routines, but they didn’t deliver the results he hoped for. He needed something different.

That’s when he started working with Dean—and everything changed.

What 13kg Lost—and a New Life Gained—Feels Like

The results? Nothing short of life-changing.

“I’ve lost over 13kg since starting with Dean. I look and feel so much better in myself. I’m not ashamed to look in the mirror or take my top off on holiday. I’m in the best shape I’ve been in since my 20s and definitely stronger than I’ve ever been. I can now do 5 pull-ups in a row or 25 max-effort pull-ups in a 5-minute timeframe.”

But the transformation wasn’t just physical. Steven’s newfound strength and fitness had a ripple effect across his life.

“I’m in a better frame of mind. I make more use of my spare time, spending it with family and doing more together instead of just sitting around watching TV. I sleep and eat better, and I’ve become an inspiration to the rest of my family.”

The Challenges—and How He Overcame Them

Life as a working dad isn’t easy. For Steven, balancing workouts, family time, shift work, and proper rest was his biggest hurdle.

“The guidance from Dean and the small changes in habits I’ve learned from him over time have helped me make better use of my time and plan ahead. I now schedule my workouts around my days off and stick to them, ensuring I can fit everything in and still have time for myself.”

Steven also cut back on time-wasting activities like scrolling on his phone or watching TV, which gave him more time for what truly mattered.

The Secret to Long-Term Success

So, what’s the magic formula? According to Steven, it’s all about consistency, support, and the right guidance.

“I get bored easily, so I thought I’d struggle to stick with this. But Dean’s guidance, workouts, and the challenges within the group kept me keen, interested, and on track. This consistency is what’s gotten me to where I am now.”

Words of Wisdom for Other Dads

If you’re reading this and feeling like change is out of reach, Steven has some advice for you:

“Stick with it—it’s a marathon, not a race. It may take a few weeks to see results in the mirror, but you’ll start feeling them almost immediately if you stay consistent. You’ll learn habits over time that will improve your health, your body, and your life.”

And if you’re ever feeling stuck?

“Reach out to Dean. He’s always there with advice, guidance, and encouragement to get you back on track. Also, get involved with the group calls and activities. They’ll keep you motivated and accountable, and the lads in the group are a great bunch.”

Are You Ready to Take the First Step?

Steven’s story is proof that it’s never too late to take control of your health and reclaim your energy, strength, and confidence. Imagine waking up each day feeling strong, capable, and ready to make the most of your time with your family.
